Pochampally ikat is made of natural fabrics like silk and cotton and also a combination of both. Having designs that are evocative, the process of making Pochampally Ikat Silk Sarees involves tying and dyeing the threads in a visualized design prior to weaving of the fabric. The fabric thus woven has been popularly used as gorgeous sarees for centuries and has now gained popularity as a fabric for furnishing, apparels and accessories.
Pochampally designs:
In Pochampally weave, a design is generally taken from a sample cloth that is selected and analyzed using graph paper. The pattern section is drawn out and then broken down into units.
The sarees typically have few selected motifs that are repeated across the saree several times. The more the motifs, the longer is the time required to tie the yarn patterns.
Pochampally Ikat Sarees has the designs that are evocative of the diamond or the chowka (diamond within a square) design.
Woven in pairs of specified length, pochampally ikats are characterized by their bold, diffused and geometrical motifs typically seen in red, black and white colors offset by wide single colored borders.
The diffused edges of the said design evolve using special skills in visualization of design and are unique to Pochampally ikat .
Along with the traditional diamond motifs, parrot, elephant and flower motifs are also used.
Pochampally ikat is handcrafted to perfection by skilled artisans who are endowed with critical skills to integrate designs, having decades of experience behind them. In certain cases, depending on the intricacy of designs, these masterpieces can take up to four months to take the final shape to the craftsman’s satisfaction. The ikat thus produced is the unique characteristic of Pochampally and is peculiar to it alone and to no other ikat in India.
